I just ordered Insanity last night. I have contemplated it for quite a while and finally bit the bullet. I have to say that I am quite excited about the nutrition plan. One of the things I have always struggled with is my diet and nutrition. I am not overweight by any means (6′ 1″ and 173lbs) but I never know what to cook and definately skip lots of meals. I am looking forward to know what the heck I’m doing as far as the nutrition goes.

I am quite concerned about the cardio part of this challenge. I have decent muscle tone for my age (36) but I only just recently quit smoking. That said, my cardio/endurance is horrible. I think I am worried about how long it will take before I can actually keep up with the workouts from a breathing perspective.

Has anyone tried the program who recently quit smoking?? What can former smokers expect to experience?

Any insight on that aspect would be appreciated!

    Hey James,

I’m glad to see you’re focusing on the nutrition plan. It will not only help you figure out what to eat and how much of it, but will give you the fuel essential to keeping up with the cardio and the workouts in general. Think of your body as a car, and food as the gas. Following the nutrition plan, you’re about to start pouring some high octane stuff into your tank ;)
Also, depending on how long you were a smoker, I can imagine it’s going to be rough keeping up at first with the pace. Don’t stress out about keeping up, remember: all the people on the screen are Insanity graduates. Go at your best pace, and don’t worry about it. And remember: the harder it is at first, the better the benefit to your body as you force it to clean up, adapt, and grow where before it was stagnant and unhealthy. So dig deeper, and go!

I am currently in the second week of Insanity and decided to double check my caloric intake volume according to the nutritional guide equation. To my surprise, the number derived is almost a full 1000 calories more than my initial calculation. I suppose I miscalculated initially, but I’m a little concerned for 1.) Am I potentially suffering in progress due to insufficient calories? 2.) Will a sudden increase in calories alter my weight loss and metabolism? I have lost 4 lbs since starting, but I’d like to make sure that I’m conditioning my body appropriately with food as well as exercise in order to complete the full program. My other question is should protein shakes(pre and post workout) and recovery formulas be included as part of the daily caloric intake? I am currently accounting only for calories taken in via actual meals. Any advice would be appreciated. Lastly, I am 33, 6′2, 251 if you want to take a shot at determining the appropriate amount of calories. Thanks,

    Hi Kevin,

All you need to focus on are the following things: do you have enough energy to finish the workouts, or are you ‘bonking’ and dying on your feet half way through? If you have the energy, don’t worry too much. A caloric deficit will help you lose that weight, so the trick lies in finding your personal sweet spot where you are eating at a deficit but getting enough energy to finish your workouts. That’s where the Insanity Nutrition plan can help. As for recovery/protein drinks, yes! Add those to your totals. They absolutely count ;)
Good luck, and hang in there!

I’ve been thinking about ordering Insanity for a long time, and I’ve decided now’s the time to do it. I’m about to start living in a dorm next semester, and I’d like to lose thirty pounds before I do. I just have a couple of questions before I order:

1.) Can I lose thirty pounds (Or more) in sixty days with Insanity if I work hard on the workouts and follow the diet plan?

2.) Am I going to be able to really do the workout? I’m 6′1″ and weigh 288 pounds, but I’ve been a strong participant in athletics for years, and I’m used to working hard and leaving all my energy on the field (or floor, as it were).

  6. Phil says:
    June 1st, 2010

    Hi Will,

You are clearly a big man. You’re fortunate in having an athletic past, but I’m worried about your joints. All that plyo is going to be rough on you, and I feel inclined to urge you to start with something less intense so as to prevent your hurting yourself. Note that this is not a question of willpower, but of conditioning. To that end, I urge that you check out Power 90, which when combined with the right nutrition plan can help you lose a ton of weight without running the risk of abusing your knees.

However. That said, if you decide to do Insanity, then I urge you to take full precautions and get the best cross trainer shoes you can, workout on a yoga mat, and take joint support formula so help maintain healthy joints. Your weight loss will depend on your adherence to the nutrition plan, and as testimonials by others have shown, it’s possible to lose a ton of weight on this program if you hang in there and eat correctly.

So, take a look at Power 90, and let me know what you think.

I was wondering if Insanity is healthy for youth?
Would it build muscle more mixed with Force Factor Supplements?

  8. Jonathan says:

hey, i was wondering if i should get insanity, because i have been really interested,
im 5′8, and weight is 240 pounds, and 18.

  9. Phil says:
    June 3rd, 2010

    Hi Alexander,

If by youth you mean pre-teens, I think your best bet is to play it safe and check with your doctor. Also, I don’t know anything about Force Factor Supplements, so once again I can’t help you with that!

  10. Phil says:
    June 3rd, 2010

    Hi Jonathan,

Given your stats I’d advise that you start with something a little less extreme, like Power 90. It may look a little dated, but it’s the program from which P90X evolved, so you know it’s got the goods. Do that, lose some of that weight, and then give Insanity a shot. You’ll feel better, do better, and really cut down the risk of injury or burn out. Best of luck!

  11. Tim says:
    June 3rd, 2010

I was wondering about how many calories you burn in each video. I’m currently counting my calorie intake and having a hard time judging how many calories I burn. Currently I’m intaking about 2500 to 2700 calories and I’m 6′2″, 212 lbs, and 20 yrs old.

  12. Phil says:
    June 4th, 2010

    Hi Tim,

The # of calories you burn is dependent on your personal effort and metabolism. So too many variables for me to give you a real figure. Consider buying a BodyBug to give you an exact number, or figure about 500-600 calories / workout as a good average.

I am still debating on purchasing INSANITY. I am 5′7; 154 pounds and I have never really worked out although I have never really been out of shape. I want to achieve 2 things if I purchase this program: 1. I am tired a lot and I was wondering if this type of program will help improve my energy level and 2. I see the before/after pictures and I wonder is it possible to truly loose 30 lbs in 60 days and be have a six pack? I guess I’m a little skeptical!

  17. Andy says:

    Hi,

I am actually starting my 3rd week of the Insanity Workout today. I am 5′11 and 230lbs. I have been able to keep up with it to date, and I really don’t feel to soar on my knees or anything like that. I was wondering, if I should still continue with this program, because I constantly see recommendations for people in my weight class to start with something less strenuous? I actually started running and working out about 5 weeks before Insanity Workout, in which I would run about 3-5 miles a day, and life weights for my upper body. I just started Insanity to boost my workout and possibly see better results. I was wondering, if I continued with Insanity, is it OK to run maybe a few miles in the morning before doing Insanity? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

  18. Phil says:
    June 7th, 2010

    Hi Brenda,

If you’re almost 1/3 of the way through P90X, I recommend you finish it. Once you’ve done that, you can jump onto Insanity. Consistency is important, because if you can’t finish P90X for being distracted by Insanity, what’s to say something won’t distract you from finishing Insanity? So yes, finish P90X, lose some more weight, and then give Insanity a shot.

  19. Phil says:
    June 7th, 2010

    Hi Ali,

Try doing a week of the first month’s exercises, and see how you feel. If they’re easy, transition into the second month’s workouts. If they’re not, do another week and see how you feel at the end of that. Listen to your body, and it will guide you straight ;)

  20. Phil says:
    June 7th, 2010

    Hi Aaliyah,

Any workout will give you energy after awhile as your health improves, and how much weight you lose depends on how strict you are with your nutrition plan, with your adherence to your exercise schedule, and what your metabolism/body fat percentage is. So is it possible to lose 30lbs in 60 days? Yes, if you’re insanely disciplined and have the right body type for it. Can you expect to lose that much? Maybe not. I think you shouldn’t focus on losing x amount in y days, but rather see this as a long term journey. Because otherwise when those 2 months are over, you’re more likely to put all that weight back on.

As for doing Insanity: I’d recommend you go with something a little less intense the first time round, like the Brazil Butt Lift or Turbo Jam.

    Hi Laura,

I’m a little concerned about your doing Insanity with a bum leg. Be extra careful, use the best cross trainers you can get your hands on, and on top of that, I recommend that you warm up with a Recovery Week first before actually starting the real workout, ok? Insanity is high impact, and you need to take care of yourself.

    Hi ana,

Sounds like you need a challenge. I think Shaun T will whip you into shape, and you’ll thrive on the intensity of it. He’ll make you sweat! Give it a shot, and let me know what you think ;)

  25. Phil says:

    Hi John,

Insanity could be the program for you if you love intensity, aren’t afraid of brutal workouts, and want to develop your aerobic and anaerobic engine. Give it a shot!

I have seen insanity over and over on the TV. I am very interested in it, but cannot afford to waste the money if I cannot do it. I have 2 children, I am 27 years old and over weight. I am about 5′6″ and 220lbs. My Dr. says I need to get the weight off. I have tried to eat better and drink alot of water, but I can’t drop anything. I don’t have time to spend at a gym all day and my activies consist of walking the dog and chasing the kids. I am the kind of person who needs to see result rather quickly or I lose interest. Do you think this is something I can take on?

Well, here we go. My husband and I are starting Insanity tomorrow. I have the whole week of meals planned, groceries bought and I’m excited for the workouts. I do have to admit I am a little nervous. We were both All American level collegiate track atheletes, but it has been a few years and we just recently welcomed our first child the end of February. Although I have dropped the weight quite quickly, I am definately not in my best shape as far as cardio or strength. Any words of advice or encouragement?
Also, our copy of the nutrition plan is messed up. Our pg. 21 is a duplicate page from pg. 9, so we are missing the last two meal options for meal 1. Can anyone help?

    Hi,

I’m interested in trying the insanity after hearing a lot of great reviews from friends. I’m 21 year old and already in pretty good shape - I dance 5-7 hours every day and my body is conditioned to long workouts, however i’m looking to tone up and improve my endurance since professional dancing is a lot of “sprint-type” movement. I’m also hoping that it’ll give me exercises that i can work on every day in the future, but i worry about my joints since PTs have told me never to run, etc. - my body is trained in a different way. do you think this is something that i could still try?

She likes the techniques Shaun does in the video but she is just not sure she will be able to go all the way through with it.My mom weighs about 195 and she has asthma and no athlete experience. She is desperate to lose weight but what do you think is best for her to do? Should she still go ahead and try insanity?

  31. Natalie says:
    June 15th, 2010

    Hi,

I’m interested in Insanity because my professor highly recommended it. I’ve looked at P90X and also CrossFit before, but both of them were too advanced for my beginner level. I have plenty of stamina but not a lot of equipment (or funds with which to purchase extra equipment). I have lost 107 lbs in the past 55 weeks and am looking to tone up this loose skin.
I need serious cardio to continue losing, but also something for definition.
From what I understand, Insanity seems to be more “up my alley”. What do you think?
    I currently take in 850-1000 cals, 85-100g carbs/day, eating 6 small meals a day.
I really really need something that will take me through the next 26 lbs, and help me to tone up as well. Help! :)

Hey Phil, I’m coming up on the end of my varsity football career. Last season I was plagued with a back injury and was out for 8 months. Now I’m looking to “catch back up” to my ripped look. I have been trying to decide on p90x or insanity. I don’t know which one will work faster to tone up my muscle. Also, we have mandatory team workouts, how will that factor in as far as the diet plan/caloric intake. Thanks!

I’m reading alot about upper body changes but what about the lower body changes, anybody? I’ve been doing P90X for a few weeks now and have definitely been able to notice and muscle change along with endurance and strength but I just ordered Insanity because I need to cut some fat inorder to show the muscles.

Does anyone have any stories with the lower body fat loss, muscle gain and definition and of course a smoother look to the overall appearance of the thighs?

    Thanks, Kathleen

  35. Kathleen says:
    June 18th, 2010

    Hi Natalie
Congrats first of all. As for P90X, honestly you can alter the program to fit your needs and abilities and as for extra equipment, you don’t need to purchase everything they mention in order to follow the program either. I have found it to be alot of fun and if you are looking to build muscle and definition, it’s the program that will give you that for sure.

As for calorie intake, if you are truly doing the P90X program 5, 6 or 7 days each week you will most likely need to up your intake some because you will be burning ALOT of calories and your muscles will need the protein to build and repair. I can’t speak to the Insanity program yet because I just ordered mine and haven’t started it yet.

Natalie: Congrats. you have come a long way. It sounds like you are very dedicted. I am only in week 2 of insanity, but I have been very impressed. Every workout, whether it’s power and resistance, abs or a circuit, is always cardio based. I do agree with Kathleen, you will probably need to increase your calorie intake. You will need the extra fuel to get through the workouts, but will still burn enough that you will be losing that last little bit of weight. They have a great 3 step formula to figure out hoe many calories you need based on your age, height, weight, then your exercise level and then youe weight goal. I think it will help guide you.

Kathleen: Thanks for the help on the recipes. You asked about lower body changes. I am only in week 2 of Insanity, but the lower body is where I have felt and seen the most changes. All of the workouts are cardio based so they help to burn the layers of fat that hid the muscle. There are a lot of lower body focused moves. I feel it the mostly in my butt, quads, and hammies. I can already see definition in my quads and calves in just 9 days.
I just had a baby less than 4 months ago, so my body is still sheding the weight. I joked with my husband the other night that “look a muscle!” as I pointed to my quad. It had been a while since I had seen one.

Awesome about the lower body benefits and in such a short time period too. As I mentioned I had been doing P90X and definitely feeling and seeing the cut up on the upper body but only feeling the strength in the lower body to date and the tummy the same thing. I can feel the muscles underneath but the inches are still there and I’d really like to give some back to who ever sent them my way lol.

My face has also slimmed down dramatically. My chest (man boobs lol) has also slimmed down but my stomache has not seemed to come down very much while the rest of my body is dramatically changing. Is it something i could be eating? i stay low calorie. is it in some cases a change that can take longer in the workout to see? I also heard that when you do ab workouts before you lose belly fat it can make your stomache larger because your abs are oushing out the fat, is that in fact true?

Its Ana again. I wrote to you a while back asking for your advice on what program to purchase. I purchased Insanity and I am now on the recovery week, which by the way should not be called recovery week. Anyways so the first couple of weeks have been really good. I can tell I have lost inches from my thighs and stomach, and I have dropped about 13 pounds. Even though I have been getting great results, I am still not satisfied. Considering that I am about to start month 2 is it possible for me to lose say 15 more pounds? In other words do people typically lose more weight in month number 2?

  48. Kathleen says:

    Hello Shana
OF COURSE it will do something for you! Even if you are totally fit on the outside, lets say there is no fat to release, no muscle to grow and define the way you look there is still coordination, speed, agility, strength, endurance … all the inside stuff that you don’t actually SEE.

The FEELING it gives you to be able to accomplish something that many can’t or won’t even attempt is also very HUGE … at least it is for me. Even though I’m not very far into my program, I’m noticing differences in my attitude about working out which is big. I am actually happy to do it … looking forward to the next workout just to see if I can do it and I’m super excited about the end result as well.

If you enjoy working out and a challenge, I believe you will also enjoy this program.

    Hello Jon & Tyler

You might be wanting a guys opinion but I thought I’d go ahead and throw my thoughts in here anyway lol.

For you Tyler … Just do it! There is no way that you will get huge with the amount of fat burning cardio that is going on here with this program. It is about cutting, defining, releasing the excess fat and weight. It’s also about doing maximum reps which as you know, when working out to gain muscle and size you select the heaviest weight you can handle that will cause you to fail at the last 3, 2, 1 reps of each set. Then as soon as it’s not challenging anymore and you aren’t actually failing at the end of each set then it’s time to up your game and increase your weights.

This is all about working it. Faster, more cardio, using only your own body weight and again, maximum reps which is for creating a leaner body and look. Look at the difference between a long distance running and a body builder as an example. They both work out intensely however the look and physical nature of their bodies is quite different.

JON … First, there is nothing extra to purchase. Just the DVD’s and bring your water … oh ya and show up!

As for following the program menus, I’ve just started my self so I can’t say whether or not SORT OF following will offer the SAME results but I’m going to guess that probably not because by SORT OF following something we are giving our self room for more error or slip ups? Plus, honestly, he offers 10 choices per each meal time and this way there is NO GUESSING so it really should just make it easier for us to follow then to have to cross our fingers and hope that we are sticking to it enough to notice the results that are there for us to gain. 60 days … it’s only 60 days. I’m thinking we should just follow it.

I did however have a beer last night and it was VERY GOOD! Not sure that’s on the menu???

    Take care guys.

    Hi Tiffany

Here’s what I’ve found out with working out. I use to go to the gym and do a weight resistance cycle and then 30 minutes of cardio 4-5 days/week. Did I notice results? Sure … some but then I was introduced to an X-Bike Class which is crazy cardio coupled with using the large muscle group of our lower body due to the fact that much of the class time is spent standing up, using gear so we are simulating mountain bike riding uphill. The handle bars also have tension on them and move side to side allowing for an upper body work out at the same time. Then there are periods of sprinting.

Anyway my point is I get it all in 30-45 minutes, depending on which class I’m in and this particular class burns up to 1000 calories/hour. So in a 30 minute class I’m burning up to 500 calories [depending upon my effort] while also building muscle. What better use of time is that!!!

So now on to Insanity [there is a reason for my above explanation lol]. You are running 1.5 miles each day and doing stomach exercises that may or may not be working your stomach as well as they could be? Why not do something that will take you just as much time but is put together by an expert offering proven success? This is my advice to you.

I would say that if you enjoy the running because it gets you outside then continue to do it for the enjoyment factor of it but if you are looking to create some real changes and make the best use of your time and effort, I’m going to go with Insanity [and P90X after the fat stores have been shed ... that's what I'm going to do. Go back to P90X after my Insanity adventure].

    Hi Ana
I can’t wait to see a release of 13 pounds!!! What were you hoping for in your first month? Just curious.

Plus … what if you are also gaining muscle weight? Then the scale isn’t really telling you the WHOLE truth. Just a little something to keep in mind.

I would go with the mirror, your clothing and your spirits over the scale.

Hello, I’m about to start Insanity tomorrow, and I’m very nervous. I’m approx 222 lb 5′7” and 19 years old. I’m not physically fit but I have lot’s of endurange and energy. I think I can handle it, but I’m not sure if I should try. My goal is to lose about 60 lbs in no more than 4 months. What do you think?

Well, I’ve been doing insanity for over 4 weeks. I’ve lost only 9 pounds. This workout is very hard and I do have to stop and jump back in it frequently. I have been eating according to the meal plan. I have gotten stronger but I am not satisfied with the results yet at all. I started 5′7″ 189 pounds and I’m down to about 180 give or take water weight. Idk after working this hard I was expecting better. So I guess I’m the only comment on the net where this hasn’t brought “amazing” results.

  54. Kathleen says:
    July 13th, 2010

Well so far I’m still enjoying the workout but no changes on the outside to speak of … no inches lost that is and the scale has not moved either but then I’m only into REALLY the 2nd week since my true week 2 wasn’t all 6 days because I was out of town and so I was only able to do 3 days that week. So I’m starting with week 2 again to be real and honest with my self and my efforts.

I’m wondering about my calorie intake? Gonna have to play with that one for a bit and see where I need to be and go with it. Too much, not enough … finding that ‘just perfect’ spot to be in to be able to handle the intensity of the workouts, feed the body and still be able to let go of the excess!

I noticed after last nights workout the bottom of my foot pad and up into my big toe was feeling a bit sensitive … a sign of needing better shoes???

    Thanks

    Mike
Sorry to hear about your disappointment and I’m hoping that I’m not in the same boat because I … like you … believe this to be a pretty intense workout and especially so if there are no real ‘SEEN’ results! I’d take a pound a week actually and then eventually I’ll be looking for the inches to reevaluate them self and create a more curvy figure.

As mentioned previously, I’m still looking forward to each day and totally looking forward to the results to start to REALLY show them self. I can tell internally, but that was probably from P90X because I was in 3 weeks on that program and I could not only feel the muscles doing their thang, I could see it but switch to Insanity because I wanted to shed the excess fat to be able to truly notice the muscle gain and definition.

    Hang in there!!!

Hi, im 17 years old, 5′3 and weigh 100 lbs. Im fairly small, and i would like to gain a lot more muscle than i currently have so I can be prepared for soccer season, will Insanity help me gain muscle?

  58. mike M says:

Mike, for gaining muscle I recommend doing heavy weights. 6-8 reps and in some cases 4-6 reps. Make sure you have a spot and have someone to show you what you are doing. I don’t know it well enough, but take a look at P90x too. But I think heavy weights is the way to go for you.

Well, next week I start Max Insanity and it’s not going to be easy. On the calendar it say’s to do both the fit test and a 1 hour max workout…Can you split it up? That’s 1 1/2 hours of hell lol. I hope I start seeing more physical results soon.

    Phil-

I am just finishing my week of Max workouts, so far i am down 17lbs. I am 22, 5″10 & currently 172lbs, i started insanity at 189lbs. I have gained extreme tone in my legs, arms, & shoulders. my face has also slimmed down dramatically. I feel alot better day by day. But my stomache does not seem to be shrinking at all. Is it how i eat? I stay on a low calorie budget daily. What would you recommend me trying? could i do more ab workouts? Thanks

I have been considering Insanity, for a while, I travel 100% of the time. I am fairly athletic and love to run, bike, and train, but being on the road I have struggled staying fit in hotel Gyms. Is Insanity recommended for a woman age 25, 5′9″ and 190lbs? I plan to run 2 half marathons this fall and I want to get my body in great shape for those. Running isn’t take the weight off plus I hate running on a treadmill. I’ve also looked at P90x. Which would you recommend?

I bought 2 sets of the Insanity Workout one for me and one for a gift. All of the DVD’s in both packages don’t work. I mean I pop them in my DVD an nothing appears, and the the family member who received the gift said that only one dvd worked in her package, but it was skiping. The dvd’s say made in China. I will report this to the BBB. I trully don’t recommend buying a product that doesn’t work. Remember I ordered 2 seperate packages. “Thanks for the nutrition guide”.

Yeah I’m doing max this week. I did the fit test on Friday ( I workout sunday-friday). It is intense. MaxInterval gave me a headache the rest of the day. I’ve only lost a total of about 10 pounds and I feel I need to lose another 21. Idk, I’m eating right and going through hell, I’m hoping I see a jump in results one of these weeks. I have some results and some people have slightly noticed but nothing life changing or amazing. Yes, this workout hurts. Even Tanya got tired in the MaxPlyo circuit lol.

David G- BBB? Because you bought a bootleg DVD. This product is awesome. As for everyone asking for help on here your best bet is to find a different forum. They don’t respond to you on here. & when they do they pick & choose on who to answer

I’m on the second week of insanity and im not really following the nutrition plan, however, i do try to follow the the calorie intake for insanity workout. Will I still be able to reach my goal, which is to lose 10 pounds of fat.

I’m 5′10″ and 151 pounds and I’m at 14% body fat. I want to lose fat and gain muscle mass and have that hard, cut look with my body when I take my shirt off without having to flex. Will I reach my goal? Any good advice?
